A number of Aston Villa supporters have been reacting on social media to the news that their former defender John Terry has reportedly agreed to join Spartak Moscow.

Sky Sports claim on their website that the ex-Chelsea powerhouse is set to seal a short-term, one-year deal with the Russian side, in a move which will see a year’s extension option included in the switch.

The 78-cap England international was a mainstay of the Villa team that reached the Play Off final last season, however it appears he has decided against a return to the Midlands, having been linked with a move back on a free transfer.

The majority of Villa fans have reacted negatively to the news, wondering who is going to marshal their defence this year and questioning the future of manager Steve Bruce.

OPINION

This is a big blow to Villa, there’s no denying it. Even though Terry’s contract expired at the end of last season, there were many Villa fans who wanted the former Chelsea captain to stick around at Villa Park. However, it now appears that he is off to Russia. This has led to an abject reaction from the team’s supporters. Steve Bruce’s side have been struggling defensively as it is, with midfielder Mile Jedinak operating as a centre half, and now they’ve seemingly failed to bring Terry back to the club. Many Villans fans are now openly questioning the manager’s future. The club has new owners who will be keen for the team to secure promotion as quickly as possible, and the mediocre start that Bruce’s side has made doesn’t do the former Birmingham boss any favours. The supporters are right to be frustrated, as Terry would’ve helped them out this season. Alas, it doesn’t look like that’ll be happening now.
