A section of Manchester City fans took to Twitter to criticise Ilkay Gundogan for his performance in their side’s 2-1 Champions League defeat against Lyon on Wednesday night.

Pep Guardiola’s side suffered a shock home loss, and their first of the campaign, as goals from Maxwel Cornet and Nabil Fekir cancelled out Bernardo Silva’s second-half strike.

Many City supporters were critical of the performance of midfielder Gundogan, who played 55 minutes before he was replaced by Leroy Sane.

COMMENTARY:

This was a wake-up call to City, whose team selection and line-up was bemusing and badly backfired. Gundogan was surprisingly given the nod to start in central midfield ahead of Bernardo Silva, who is far more effective in a string-pulling role rather than out wide, and roamed around to little effect. It was no great surprise when he was removed nine minutes into the second period for Leroy Sane, who instantly brought impetus to the attacks. Gundogan has overcome some horrible injuries but there is a sense he does not quite fit into the team assembled by Guardiola. He slows down moves and is a little ponderous on the ball. Sure, it was Fernandinho who made the mistakes for which City were rightly punished by Lyon, but Gundogan stood out as the real weak link. He had a spell last season when he looked back to his best since his Borussia Dortmund days, yet the jury is now out on the German. He needs to deliver more.
