Newcastle United fans have taken to Twitter to destroy Joselu after the team’s pre-season friendly defeat to Augsburg on Saturday afternoon.
Rafael Benitez’s side ended their pre-season programme in disappointing fashion with a 1-0 loss to the Bundesliga outfit in front of a crowd of 21,331 with a handful of fan chants about the owner and the lack of ambition at the club.
Joselu was selected to spearhead the Newcastle attack but struggled to make an impression and supporters of the north-east giants were very critical of his contribution on social media.
This Is Futbol has rounded up some of the best tweets:
Thoughts on that. Lots of effort. Little quality. Joselu is utter dross. Need more on Shelvey and Kennedys wavelength. #nufc

That was a snoozefest. Need a striker desperately. Joselu is so terrible can’t believe we ever signed him. It amazes me that mike Ashley gets progressively worse as a human. #nufc

If rondon does sign for us I really hope he hits the ground running. Our attacking threat is so bad. No disrespect to Joselu I know he’s trying but we need better. #NUFC

Daryl Murphy is better than Joselu like #NUFC

Likeable bloke on twitter & works hard, but Joselu shouldn’t be anywhere near #Nufc bench never mind starting games. As bad as we’ve had

I don’t like slating any player but I’m going to be honest here but when you pay £5m for a striker you’ll get peanuts not class Joselu works hard which a great but sadly he’s not the answer long term trying to be careful what I’m saying don’t want to cause a scene here #NUFC

COMMENTARY:
Newcastle’s striker situation has been a big talking point among fans all summer, with a constant clamour for the club to sign a player capable of scoring 15-plus goals in the upcoming season. Benitez has made no attempt to hide his disappointment at the lack of a new arrival, especially as Aleksandr Mitrovic was sold last week for a fee rising to £27million. That was astoundingly good business from the Magpies, who could not find a place for the Serbian in their team in the previous two campaigns. He was behind Joselu in the pecking order last season, due to his lack of reliability. However, Mitrovic is a far more natural goalscorer and the Spaniard’s immense work rate and prowess outside of the box does not compensate for a lack of cutting edge within it. No wonder the fans are calling for him to be replaced by a striker in the club’s glorious number nine tradition.
