With 12 signings bagged and a mass overhaul of the squad at the advanced stages, Rangers’ transformation under Steven Gerrard is almost complete.
But at least two more signings are on the cards by the closure of the Scottish window on Friday, one of whom could be a brilliant capture if the Light Blues can get it done.
As reported by Football Insider, Rangers are working on a deal to sign Nottingham Forest defender Joe Worrall in the latest twist to their pursuit of a senior centre-back who can challenge Connor Goldson and Nikola Kalic for a starting spot.
It is said the Glasgow giants have held talks with Forest and have offered to pay a substantial loan fee to land him by the end of the week.
Worrall has slipped down the pecking order at the City Ground following a £20million summer spending spree that has relegated him to fifth-choice centre-back behind Danny Fox, Tobias Figueiredo, Michael Dawson, Michael Hefele and Jack Robinson.
That is not a measure of Worrall’s ability or his immense potential in a position where players tend to peak later than they do in attacking positions.
Capped three times at England Under-21 level, the Forest academy product is a commanding defender (Transfermarkt state he is 6ft 3in) who reads the game well and is mature beyond his years.
The 21-year-old was a regular for Forest last season as he made 35 appearances in all competitions and made such progress that his club rejected a £10million offer from Burnley earlier this year.
Rangers need defensive reinforcements, despite the impact made by Goldson, Katic and Jon Flanagan in the first six weeks of the season.
Worrall could be a blinding loan signing if Gerrard can pull it off.
Forest have their reservations about sending the rising star to Scotland for the season, so the Liverpool icon might need to be at his smooth-talking best to push what would be yet another shrewd deal over the line.
