Aston Villa striker Scott Hogan is free to join Championship rivals Sheffield United on loan this month and that his future lies in his own hands, according to journalist Alan Nixon.

The Sun reporter claims on his personal Twitter account that the 26-year-old, who is yet to feature for the Villans this season as a result of injury, must make a decision on whether to join the Blades on a temporary deal or stay at Villa Park for the first half of the campaign.

The Republic of Ireland international was a mainstay for Steve Bruce last season, failing to appear in just nine of their 46 league games, but managed to score just six goals.

Good move for Villa?

Hogan certainly was not at his best last season and it seems as though his poor form has resulted in Bruce deciding to ship him out for some game time this season.

However, with a lack of attacking options at the club, is letting him go really the right idea?

Perhaps a short term loan until the January window opens is a good plan to get him building up his fitness and form and proving that he can offer something to the first team at Villa Park.

Sheffield United will be looking to finish in a decent position at the top of the table and so he will be tested by the Blades, but perhaps that is what he needs.

Likely to happen?

This one falls firmly at the feet of the player himself and he needs to decide whether a move away could help him reignite the form he showed to earn him the move to Villa in the first place.

If Bruce tells him there is no place in the squad, then a move certainly looks likely, and if United want him that badly he is nearly guaranteed game time there.
