Wolves tabled a bid worth up to £53.9million for AC Milan midfielder Franck Kessie in the summer transfer window, according to Calcio Mercato.

The Italian news outlet claimed that the West Midlands club offered an initial £36million for the 21-year-old Ivory Coast international, with an extra £17.9million in add-ons.

It is understood that Atletico Madrid were also interested in Kessie, but AC Milan have been in talks over a new contract for him over the last few weeks after an impressive debut season at the San Siro.

OPINION

Kessie would have been an unbelievable signing for Wolves if Nuno Espirito Santo was able to pull it off, but Milan clearly value the midfielder at more than the £53.9million tabled by the Premier League new boys. Nuno’s side have had a poor start to their first season back in the top-flight. They have failed to earn a win in two games against sides that finished with 10 men and maybe someone like Kessie would have made a difference for them. For AC Milan last season, the former Atalanta star made 54 appearances across all competitions, scoring five goals and supplied six assists. He would have compliment Ruben Neves very well and Wolves should now hope and pray that he does not sign a new deal at the San Siro and they can try again for him in January, because it is clear that this squad is not as strong as the fans first thought it was.
