West Brom’s defence has looked shaky in their opening three games of the Championship season.

While attackers like Matt Phillips, Harvey Barnes, Dwight Gayle and Jay Rodriguez look as though they are going to tear up the second-tier this term, there are huge issues at the opposite end of the pitch and Darren Moore must look to add an extra body to his centre-back options before the end of the month.

Ahmed Hegazi has displayed a disasterclass of defending and needs to be axed from the team as soon as possible but with speculation rife about Craig Dawson’s future, there’s no guarantee that he is going to be the man needed to come in and solve this issue.

It could be hard to pull off, but Moore could be crazy not to try and launch a swoop for Mexico international Diego Reyes, with the centre-back currently available as a free agent since his release from Porto at the end of last season.

Reyes, 25, would have starred at the World Cup if it wasn’t for an ill-timed injury and would be a clear upgrade in quality to Albion’s centre-back options after conceding six goals in three Championship games.

He made 24 appearances in all competitions for Porto last term, scoring three goals in the process.

The former Club America man can also operate as a defensive midfielder, which is another area which the Baggies could do with bolstering after releasing Claudio Yacob in the summer and not replacing him.

Italian news outlet Calcio Mercato reported in July that Newcastle United were trying to sign Reyes, but since then Rafa Benitez has added to his ranks and it doesn’t look as though he will be going back in for the Mexican.

It would be a tough ask to try and sign Reyes, but the 6ft 2in defender could be the man that the Black Country club needs to help provide a platform to build their promotion campaign on.
