Mark Warburton has revealed that he tried to sign Connor Goldson for Nottingham Forest before the defender joined Rangers in the summer transfer window.

Goldson, 25, has been in top form since swapping Brighton for Glasgow earlier this year, up until a shaky performance against Motherwell on Sunday saw Steven Gerrard’s men concede three goals.

However ex-Gers boss Warburton, who quit Ibrox in February 2017, has been raving about the defender’s impact since signing for the Light Blues and added that he once tried to sign him for Forest.

“Obviously I wish Steven all the very best because we want the club and him to do well,” he said, as quoted by the Scottish Sun.

“It’s great that experienced players like him and Frank Lampard are coming into the game.

“I think he’s now got some money. The likes of Connor Goldson, we tried to get him at Nottingham Forest.

“He’s a Premier League centre-half, he had a heart scare for eight or nine months. But he’s a very talented player and he’s a dominant force there.”

OPINION

Goldson has been very impressive since he was signed by Rangers, and hopefully his performance on Sunday is just going to be an anomaly for the former Brighton man. It did not help when the 25-year-old slipped on the slippery surface at Fir Park to give the hosts the lead as that probably rocked his confidence for the rest of the game. He needs to get back to his best this week though as Gerrard faces his two biggest tests in management yet. Firstly, an away trip to Russia to play Ufa in the Europa League play-off is going to be huge for the club as reaching the group stage is no doubt a minimum expectation. Then it will be Gerrard versus Brendan Rodgers as Rangers take on Celtic in the Old Firm derby. Goldson looks as though he is big-game player so hopefully he will be able to stand up to these two mammoth tests.
