Rangers have rejected a bid for James Tavernier from West Brom, according to a reliable journalist.

Chris Jack, who works for the Evening Times and the Herald, made the claim on his personal Twitter page on Wednesday evening.

He added that their captain would only be sold if West Brom met their valuation of the player, but it was not revealed how much this was.

This comes after Sky Sports. (live transfer blog, 17.31) reported that the Championship side had tabled a £3m bid for the defender.

OPINION

The fact that Rangers have rejected West Brom’s reported opening gambit isn’t surprising – Tavernier is worth more than £3million, especially when you look at the valuations of other players this summer. However, what’s interesting is that Jack doesn’t say that Tavernier isn’t for sale. If his info is correct, they seem to be indicating that he is surplus to requirements and that he can leave if the right offer comes in. This seems like a dangerous game to play. If a reasonable offer ins’t reached this would be pretty distracting for a player who’s always given his all for the club. What message does this say to Tavernier? He’s preparing for a Europa League qualifier tomorrow night and Rangers need everyone switched on and giving 100%. We don’t think we’ve heard the last of this story yet but we hope that if Rangers do sell the player, that they got a large fee for him. They have a habit of undervaluing players and Tavernier should go for a good sum of money.
