Rangers manager Steven Gerrard is plotting a move for Croatian defender Borna Barisic from European opponents NK Osijek, according to the Express.

The newspaper revealed on their website that the Gers boss was impressed with Barisic’s performances from the 25-year-old during the Europa League qualifiers and is lining up a seven figure bid of £2million to sign the left-back.

Rangers dumped the defensive powerhouse and his Croatian team mates out of the Europa League on Thursday after winning 2-1 on aggregate to progress to the third qualifying round.

Barisic has three caps for his national side, making Croatia’s preliminary 32-man World Cup squad but failed to make the plane to Russia.

Good move for Rangers?

Barisic played a big part in Osijek’s 1-1 draw at Ibrox on Thursday night, driving home the late equaliser which deflected off Conor Goldson.

Gerrard has been searching for a defensive option to play out on the left and Barisic’s recent performance could merit a move to Glasgow.

To sign the defender for £2 million would be a worthy bit of business and he would certainly improve the back four if he was to make a move.

Likely to happen?

Possibly. Steven Gerrard has already signed a Croatian centre-back in Nikola Katic but could be tempted into raiding the Croatian market once again.

The former Liverpool captain has already made 10 signings this summer but could make a few more signings before the transfer window closes.

Barisic was a star performer for Osijek with his willingness to get forward along with producing dangerous crosses and would be a likely upgrade to Gerrard’s defence.
