Many Rangers fans were left raving on social media over the performance of full back Jon Flanagan after he helped the club to a 1-1 draw against Aberdeen on Sunday afternoon.

The Gers kicked off their Premiership campaign away against the side who finished second last season and found themselves a man down early on, striker Alfredo Morelos handed a straight red for appearing to kick out at one of the home side’s players.

However, despite their man’s disadvantage, it was Steven Gerrard’s men who took the lead courtesy of right back and captain James Tavernier, netting from the penalty spot after Josh Windass was pulled down in the box.

The home side broke the Gers’ hearts with an injury time leveller, Bruce Anderson netting with a low shot past Allen McGregor.

Despite letting the lead slip, it was the display of Flanagan, one of the many summer signings made by Gerrard, who had a number of the Gers faithful delighted, with one supporter calling him “a steal”.

Opinion

Flanagan might not be stealing the headlines after the clash at Aberdeen but he certainly appears to be stealing the hearts of the Rangers faithful. His display on the left flank was mighty impressive, offering a serious attacking threat up and down the wing while remaining defensively resolute at the back, against the side who pipped the Gers to second last season no less. If he can keep up these sort of displays for the rest of the campaign, then the Light Blues have made a massive improvement at the back, which will no doubt help their cause as they try to close the gap to Celtic at the top of the table.
