Rangers have given up on a move for Liverpool’s striker Dominic Solanke but are moving closer to a deal for Kyle Lafferty, according to an update from solid Rangers blog Four Lads Had a Dream.

Talking on the new Gersnet podcast, Stevie Clifford said that the move for Solanke was “not happening” but that a deal for Lafferty should go through.

“We reported it [Solanke] in July and the rumour hasn’t went away,” Clifford said.

“However, in the last 48 hours that rumour is getting knocked on the head, we’re getting told that’s not getting done, we’re told it’s not happening.

A deal for Hearts striker Lafferty could be imminent though.

“Both clubs are talking again and they seem close to an agreement. I think that will be done. Many people are saying Monday or Tuesday. Hopefully by Tuesday we’ll be a lot close to Lafferty.”

Good move for Rangers?

Out of the two, we think that most Rangers fans would have loved to have seen Dominic Solanke at Rangers. The Liverpool striker might have struggled at Anfield but he looked sharp towards the end of last season and the Scottish Premiership would give him a stage that he would fly on. He was supposed to be heading out on loan this summer although these latest remarks make it sound like it’s not going to be to Rangers. That’s a blow but a deal for Lafferty would still be good. He might come with a certain amount of baggage, but he knows the league inside out and he knows how to score against Celtic. That’s two big plus points and he’ll definitely add another dimension to Gerrard’s squad.

Likely to happen?

From all the reports that have come out of Rangers recently, it appears that a move for Lafferty is getting very close. We’ve heard talk of midweek and now the Four Lads blog says that by Tuesday we’ll be a lot closer. That means a move could happen imminently, with an announcement possibly even later on today. Until it’s done though, it’s not done. Solanke seems to be dead in the water though and that’s a real shame.
