Former Celtic star and current pundit Chris Sutton has stated that he hopes the Hoops can re-sign former fan favourite Patrick Roberts once again from Manchester City after seeing him not move before the English deadline day.

The exciting winger has spent the last two seasons at Parkhead on loan from the Premier League champions but left at the end of the previous campaign hinting that he would be trying to forge a career in England.

However, with Thursday’s deadline in England passing without the 21-year-old moving, either permanently or on loan from the Etihad Stadium, Sutton has revealed he is hopeful of the attacker returning to Glasgow once again.

Writing on his personal Twitter account when probed by a fan about a possible reunion, the ex-Hoop said: “I hope so…. let’s hope after the last day or two Celtic get their recruitment finally into gear.”

Opinion

Any hopes of Roberts making a third move to Celtic Park seemed dead in the water when he left at the start of the summer, but those chances have increased massively with the end of the summer window in England. He might well have been hoping for a loan at another Premier League side to continue his development but seeing as one has not come to fruition, it is either a move to the Championship or abroad – including Scotland. Surely the Hoops have to be among the frontrunners, considering their Champions League football and hopes of yet another title success north of the border. He would be welcomed back with open arms and he could play an important role once again, supplying the likes of Odsonne Edouard and Moussa Dembele with opportunities. That being said, Callum McGregor has been in great form, and pushing him out of the side would be a tough ask right now – could a lack of guaranteed game time mean the Bhoys are disappointed?
