BBC pundit Tam McManus and former Celtic attacker Kris Commons have both urged Brendan Rodgers to make a move for former Chelsea legend John Terry, as their defensive frailties cost them again in their Europa play-off v Suduva.

A 1-1 draw isn’t the worst result in the world and Celtic should progress, but their inability to defend basic set pieces dumped them out of the Champions League and has made their life more difficult than it needs to be against Suduva.

McManus said he had been chatting with Commons and that they both agreed Rodgers should launch a late bid for Terry.

He added that Rodgers should “ask the question. Celtic cannot defend anything in the air just now”.

OPINION

The idea of this is going to split Celtic fans right down the middle. Some will think he’s past it, but he did a good job at Aston Villa last season and the one thing he brings is a commanding presence in the box. Celtic wouldn’t let many bad goals in from set pieces with Terry marshalling the defence. There are issues though, most notably his wages. Terry doesn’t need one last job and might be happy to hang his boots up. The thought of joining a struggling side at the moment, with low morale, might not be high up on his wish list. And there will be just as many Celtic fans opposed to the move as for it. Terry comes with a lot of baggage and that might simply be too much for them. He’s undoubtedly a legend for Chelsea and in the Premier League but his best days are way, way behind him and there are better – and cheaper – options out there for Rodgers.
