Rangers goalkeeper Jak Alnwick is set to complete a loan move to Scunthorpe United today, according to Football Insider.

The reliable site claim the Ibrox third-choice shot-stopper has agreed the terms of a season-long switch to the English League One club after slipping down the pecking order following the summer signing of Allan McGregor.

Football Insider report Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has given the green light for Newcastle-born Alnwick, 25, to return south of the border and the move is now just hours from being finalised.

Good move for Rangers?

Given that Alnwick is third in the pecking order behind new number one McGregor and former first choice Wes Foderingham, only an injury crisis would catapult him into contention for a starting role this season. He has made only 11 appearances for the Light Blues since joining from Port Vale in January 2017 and the consistent excellence of McGregor since the start of the season means the 6ft 2in colossus (source: Transfermarkt) Alnwick’s opportunities are likely to be thin on the ground. Gerrard doesn’t want an unhappy player moping around, and Rangers are better off getting him off the wage bill and freeing up funds for the key first teamers.

Likely to happen?

Given Football Insider’s reliability on Rangers transfers, it is only a matter of time before Alnwick is unveiled as a Scunthorpe loan signing. Only a late mishap, such as a failed medical, is likely to prevent this deal going through before the Football League loan window shuts on Friday evening.
