Wolves owner Jeff Shi has admitted that the club could be forced to leave Molineux as he laid down the club’s ambitions to grow and prosper.

Wolves gained promotion to the Premier League last season after an outstanding campaign last time out, as they won the Championship title with 99 points.

They have strengthened their side ahead of their upcoming top-flight season with a number of ambitious signings, including Rui Patricio, Raul Jiminez, Joao Moutinho and Jonny Castro.

It seems their ambition doesn’t stop there either, with the club’s owner Jeff Shi admitting that they may have to move stadiums to realise his aims for the club.

“I think by the end of the season we will make some crucial decisions on whether to expand the stadium or build a new stadium,” he said,’ Shi told the Express & Star.

“Molineux is important for the fans of course and we are looking at it and have architects looking at designs.

“After this season we will have a decision.

“The stadium is in the centre of the city; there is no space to expand the stadium too much.

“We are talking about the maximum size of the stadium, maybe 40,000, 45,000 or 50,000.”

OPINION

This is both good news and bad news at the same time for Wolves fans. On the one hand, they won’t want to leave their current stadium as it’s been their home for over 100 years, they have had some amazing players, teams, managers and memories at Molineux over the past decade and losing the stadium will be a massive blow for the whole of Wolverhampton. However, with the new owner, manager and players on board, the Molineux faithful are fully aware of the ambition of the new administration and if the club is going to compete with the bigger clubs then they will need to fit more supporters into the stadium in order to bring in more revenue. That revenue will bring in better players and will allow the club to flourish on the pitch, surely leaving their stadium is a small price to pay if you can compete with the big boys.
