Tottenham became the first Premier League side ever not to purchase a player in the summer transfer window.
It’s a record that has angered Spurs fans after they missed out on long-term target Jack Grealish after a summer of prevaricating by Daniel Levy.
There’s a sense that he could have landed his man if he’d offered £25million when Dr Tony Xia was still in charge at Aston Villa and the midlands side had financial problems.
However, that’s not the way that Levy works and when the new owners came in, they effectively shut up shop.
Now, Mauricio Pochettino must get an assurance that Spurs have ambition by forcing Daniel Levy to make a move to re-sign Luka Modric.
The former Tottenham player joined Real Madrid for £27million six years ago and according to a Sky journalist, has just told his side that he wants to leave in the summer.
There is a reported gentleman’s agreement that enables the World Cup Golden Ball winner to leave whenever he wants.
And it looks like Modric is ready to call time on his stay at the Bernabeu.
Calciomercato and Sky Sports journalist Fabrizio Romano claimed that Modric has told Real Madrid president Florentino Perez that he wants to join Inter Milan in the summer.
This was reported by Calciomercato journalist Kaustubh Pandey on his personal Twitter account on Friday morning.
Fabrizio Romano has exclusively told Calciomercato that Luka #Modric has told Florentino #Perez about his desire to leave #RealMadrid to join #InterMilan this summer. (1/2)

#Perez hopes he can appease him with an improved contract, but #Modric wants him to respect a gentleman's agreement that was signed some months ago and that allows him to leave whenever he wants to. #RealMadrid are looking for replacements already.

Modric spent four years at Tottenham after signing in a £19million deal from Dynamo Zagreb.
He might be 32 but he proved at the World Cup that he can still run the show at an elite level, winning the best player award at the 2018 World Cup finals.
This will be his final move and what better way to round off a career than returning to Tottenham and leading them to the Premier League title?
It sounds like he might have made his mind up to go to Inter Milan, but Levy should prove that he wants to take Tottenham forward and at least attempt to hijack the move.
The Spurs fans deserve it.
