It has been a wretched week at Tottenham, with a fallow transfer window that broke an unwelcome Premier League record followed by a series of demoralising stadium updates.

But Spurs fans will be punching the air after digesting the contents of a Sky Sports report detailing the big-name players who could leave the English top flight before 31 August.

It is said Danny Rose “could be set to leave” after slipping down the left-back pecking order behind new first choice Ben Davies.

But, crucially, Sky claim linked-away duo Toby Alderweireld and Mousa Dembele “both look set to stay beyond this month” even though they have entered the final year of their contracts.

That is huge news for supporters disappointed and disillusioned at the prospect of waving farewell to two of the outstanding performers of the Mauricio Pochettino.

Alderweireld was frozen out in the second half of last season after snubbing a contract offer from the club but he has been the best centre-back in the Premier League since joining from Atletico Madrid three years ago.

Dembele has been barely less effective than his countryman, patrolling the midfield with the unique combination of grit and guile that leaves even Pochettino shaking his head in disbelief at his brilliance.

With over two weeks of the summer window remaining, Tottenham are still vulnerable to losing the Belgium international pair to clubs on the continent.

Sky’s update suggests that will not now happen, which is a better outcome for the team than signing one or two decent players of the calibre of Jack Grealish last week.

Alderweireld and Dembele are A-list proven performers who would walk into any side in the top flight. Keeping hold of them is brilliant news for the team.
