Mauricio Pochettino has made it clear to Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy that he does not want the club to cash in on Christian Eriksen as Paris Saint-Germain step up their £100million pursuit, according to the Express.

The newspaper claim Eriksen, 26, has failed to sign the contract that Spurs have offered him this summer and that has put PSG on red alert with just two years of his current deal remaining.

The Express report Pochettino is adamant the Denmark international will not be sold as he has an excellent relationship with the player and made that clear during a pre-World Cup dinner with him.

Good move for Tottenham?

Absolutely not. Perhaps only Harry Kane is more important to Spurs than the great Dane who has been a nailed-on starter ever since joining from Ajax five years ago. Eriksen is irreplaceable, simply because no-one else in Pochettino’s squad can match his creativity and technical excellence. Sure, £100million is an astronomical sum, and it shouldn’t be ignored how much the club’s stadium costs have spiralled out of control, but selling Eriksen in the final two weeks of the summer would be a disastrous move that would send the team on a downward spiral that may take years to recover from.

Likely to happen?

Spurs are vulnerable, because Eriksen has snubbed their offer and his current deal expires in the summer of 2020. The longer the contract stalemate goes on, the stronger the negotiating stance of the attacking midfielder, whose agent only has to pick up the phone to get Europe’s biggest clubs beating a path to his door. Nevertheless, Eriksen appears to have the love and admiration of a manager who knows how to get the best out of him. Expect him to sign on the dotted line. Eventually.
