Lucas Moura will make a big impact at Tottenham this season, according to Jermaine Jenas.

The former Spurs midfielder and Match of the Day pundit told the BBC Sport website that the Brazil international will feature far more prominently for Mauricio Pochettino’s side after an impressive pre-season.

Jenas is convinced that forward Moura will add a new dimension to an attack that has proved too one dimensional on some occasions.

“Tottenham were a little bit too ‘pass-pass-pass-pass’ at times last season and it makes life easier if you have got an alternative – all the other big clubs have got at least one, and Son is the only Spurs player who will take a player on,” Jenas told the BBC Sport site.

“You have to remember Spurs brought in Lucas Moura from Paris St-Germain for £23m in January.

“Moura was not used as much as I thought he would be last season, but he has had a very good pre-season and started Saturday’s win over Newcastle. He will be like a brand new signing, and I am expecting to see a lot more of him.”

OPINION

The 2017-18 season was virtually a write-off for Moura. He was on the fringes at PSG following the eye-poppingly expensive arrivals of Kylian Mbappe and Neymar, and then joined a settled Spurs side in a brutally demanding league he had never experienced. But Pochettino didn’t recruit the Brazilian forward as a short-term measure. The player who scored 46 goals and supplied 49 assists in 229 matches for PSG during a golden era for the club was signed to provide Tottenham with a new attacking weapon in the medium and long term. The signs are he can add something different to an attack which has many impressive qualities – from the runs of Dele Alli, the creativity of Christian Eriksen to the goals and brilliance of Harry Kane – but none of the holy trinity are ball carriers capable of beating an opponent with pace and skill. Moura fits into that category, and he can score and create plenty of goals, too. With Son absent on international duty, Moura is likely to start again at the weekend and show what he can do in the Premier League.
