Former Tottenham and England striker Peter Crouch has been left raving over the club’s summer as a result of the numerous new contracts that they have sealed for their top stars.

The Lilywhites were the first club since 2003 not to make a single senior signing during the summer transfer window which has left many fans raging towards Daniel Levy and pundits predicting a fall from the top four.

However Crouch, who is still playing for Stoke in the second tier, rubbished suggestions of doom and gloom and insisted that the club could not have made better signings than sealing deals for manager Mauricio Pochettino, star striker Harry Kane and other members of the first team.

He wrote in his column for the Daily Mail: “I do not care what anyone says; they could not have made a better signing than that (Kane) in the window.

“Mauricio Pochettino, the manager who has been at the heart of Tottenham’s progress, has been rewarded with a bumper long-term deal, as have Son Heung-Min — a forward who I hold in the highest regard — Davinson Sanchez, Erik Lamela and Michel Vorm.

“Those are not the actions of a club that lacks ambition nor does it tell me they are doomed. So while it is strange to see them become the first club since 2003 not to make an incoming transfer, I still expect them to be in the top four next May.

“When they get back home to White Hart Lane, I can see them taking off again.”

Opinion

Well Crouch might well have some rose – or should that be Lilywhite – tinted spectacles on, but he does make a fair point. The fact the club were not only able to keep Harry Kane and his team mates from prospective suitors but convince them to pen new contracts at the club is a huge success for Spurs, and not a move which can be allowed to be forgotten any time soon. Yes, fans are right to be frustrated about a complete lack of signings, for it seems as though the club are just standing still while their rivals strengthen around them, but if there were no deals right for the squad, then why should Daniel Levy splash cash for the sake of it? The new stadium may have reduced their spending power somewhat and a lack of senior exits also did not help their cause, but it cannot be forgotten that Spurs finished third last season, and with the quality at Mauricio Pochettino’s disposal, it would take a brave individual to bet against them doing so again.
