The door is open for Christian Eriksen to quit Tottenham amid a contract stalemate and strong interest from Real Madrid, according to the Sun.

The newspaper claim Spurs are “desperately trying” to convince the Danish playmaker to an extension to his current contract, which expires in two years.

The Sun report Eriksen, 26, is Real’s number one choice to replace ex-Spur Luka Modric and they have been encouraged by the failure so far to reach an agreement with the London club.

Good move for Tottenham?

Definitely not. For the Spurs faithful, losing Eriksen would be third only to waving goodbye to Harry Kane and Mauricio Pochettino. The great Dane is irreplaceable, precisely because no-one else in the squad comes close to matching his technical brilliance and creativity. Eriksen was not at his best in Saturday’s 2-1 opening-day win at Newcastle, but he is an essential member of the first team who is at his absolute peak. Since joining from Ajax in the summer of 2013, Eriksen has scored 56 goals and supplied 69 assists from 227 appearances, and is getting better every year. His 2017-18 campaign was his most productive yet and he’s one player they absolutely cannot lose.

Likely to happen?

Spurs have done well to hang on to their key players in recent years, although there is still a good chance Toby Alderweireld and Danny Rose will leave before the European window shuts on 31 August. Tying Eriksen down to a new deal must be an absolute priority for the club and, while there is no sense he wants to leave, there will be anxiety among the board and fans until he extends.
