Dean Ashton predicted Southampton to get the win against Leicester City when the two sides meet at St Mary’s on Saturday.

The former Premier League star shared that he thought Jamie Vardy was important to the Foxes as they’re not as dangerous upfront without him in their side and suggested that the Saints could win the game for that reason.

Ashton did admit that in his opinion the game would still be close despite the Foxes missing their 31-year-old due to suspension as they have shown their ability to retain possession this season.

“I think Mark Hughes is right Jamie Vardy does make that much of a difference, I think suddenly without him they’re not necessarily that threatening in behind,” said Ashton on talkSPORT (August 25th, 10:19am.)

“And y’know with Ings obviously getting off the mark last week then yeah I can see Southampton but then again I think it will be close as Leicester City have kept the ball very well this season.”

OPINION

While Ashton only just about settles on backing the Saints to win, it would be no surprise if they emerge with the win from Saturday’s game. The Foxes have been impressive in their first two league games of the season but with them missing Vardy, who was sent off last weekend, then they do look weaker upfront because of it. Hughes’ side won’t have to worry about being caught on the counter as much as they would have if Vardy would have been available to play. The 31-year-old has scored one goal in his first two outings and Saints fans are no doubting breathing a sigh of relief that their side doesn’t have to face the prolific Premier League forward this weekend. So far this season the Saints have racked up one point as they earned a respectable draw against Burnley before Everton beat them 2-1 last Saturday so they should be eager to get their first win on the board.
