A section of Everton fans have taken to Twitter to criticise defender Seamus Coleman’s performance in the 2-2 draw against Bournemouth on Saturday afternoon.

The Cherries penetrated the Toffees’ defence time and time again throughout the match, dominating in the early stages thanks to some average defending by the Everton back line, which included the 29-year-old.

Some of the Everton faithful have slammed the right-back on Twitter, criticising his poor performance despite the fact he appealed for a penalty after being brought down by Bournemouth’s Charlie Daniels.

These comments included “has anyone tried turning Seamus Coleman off and on again” and “worst performance in an Everton shirt to date.”

OPINION

The fans are accurate in their criticism of Coleman – he looks a shadow of the player that usually turns up for Everton games. Yes, he had a penalty appeal in the early stages, but his disappointing defending has allowed the Bournemouth attack to slice right through them a number of times. He is at risk of being dropped by boss Marco Silva, so it is hard not to agree with the supporters in their verdict of him. He was consistent against both Wolves and Southampton, but it is difficult to understand why he suddenly switched off, especially in the first half. Nevertheless, Bournemouth must be given credit for the way they dominated early on – they were very unlucky not to get a goal in the first half. Coleman must change his ways, otherwise he will face the axe in their next match, which would be a relief to fans based on his performance.
