Newcastle fans watched their side lost 1-0 in a pre-season friendly against Augsburg on Saturday night, but found a lot to be excited about from the display of new signing Ki Sung-Yeung.
The 29-year-old joined on a free transfer from Swansea over the summer after spending a season on loan at Newcastle’s bitter rivals Sunderland in the 13/14 season.
Ki put in one of the best performances in black & white last night, after coming on as a substitute midway through the first-half, although there wasn’t a lot of competition from his teammates.
And fans flocked onto Twitter to hail his performance, while berating Mike Ashley for the lack of incoming players this transfer window.
One fan said he’d be a great signing who’s slipped under the radar a bit this summer.
And other fans were quick to point out what a brilliant partnership he seems to have developed already with Jonjo Shelvey.
Here are the best reactions from Newcastle fans to their new midfielder:
Matt Ritchie and Ayoze Perez were great today. DeAndre Yedlin and Ki also stood out. There’s a lot of positives in the squad – just need some movement this week to add to it #NUFC

Kenedy, Ki and Dubravka are the most important signings we've made this summer, and they will be the difference this season #NUFC

Ki can spray a ball like Shelvey, Schar looks decent, Kennedy knows our style of play, tactics to get down the wings, formation works with the personnel we have. Joselu needs confidence, few chances today. Oils see he lacked it on. Team moral high. We will see how it goes #nufc

Tell you what like, Ki Sung-Yeung played some absolutely blinding balls down the wing today! Impressed with Kenedy as well, especially having had time off in pre-season. Ritchie ?? Still missing a decent striker or 2 but have faith Toon ?? Dummett…aye ??? #Nufc

Have to say I loved Ki Sung-Yueng today! Didn't put a pass wrong and his range was fantastic. Could be a great signing that's gone under the radar. Very happy with that, at least! #NUFC

OPINION
It’s not been a great summer for Newcastle but they look like they’ve picked up a class act in Ki, although he’s not the marquee signing that will get pulses racing. However, Ki did enough to get noticed by the Newcastle fans last night with a slick display and a good partnership with Shelvey when he came on in the second half. You have to take the plus points where you can get them from Newcastle at the moment and Ki proved that he can play a major part in Newcastle’s season.
