Things have seemingly not gone to plan for Newcastle United manager Rafael Benitez during the summer transfer window, with the Spaniard once again vocalising his frustrations and concerns before the market comes to a close.

The Magpies have actually been quite busy with five signings through the door at St James’ Park, but considering two of those were on Tyneside last season on loan – and just one new striker through the door – there is little chance of any of the Toon Army calling it a success.

With Aleksandar Mitrovic shipped off to Fulham permanently, it leaves Joselu and Dwight Gayle as the only senior options, with neither having showed any sort of cutting edge last season.

However, if reports are to be believed, Benitez could well be onto a bit of brilliant business which could turn out to be a masterstroke.

The Northern Echo claim that as well as a move for Salomon Rondon from West Brom, the Spanish boss is plotting to raid former side Liverpool for Danny Ings on a loan-to-buy deal with talks held over an eventual £15million transfer fee – if the Magpies avoid relegation.

It is stated that the 26-year-old is keen on sealing a move to St James’ Park and considering his injury record, which have plagued his time at Anfield, loaning before buying makes perfect sense.

If Benitez can get him back firing on all cylinders, £15million could turn out to be an absolute bargain, and if he is not quite as prolific has hoped, they should still be able to recoup some of that fee if they want to sell him on.
