Former Newcastle United No 9 Mick Quinn was impressed by Joselu against Tottenham but believes loan signing Salomón Rondón should start against Cardiff.

Joselu was a surprise inclusion in Rafael Benítez’s first starting XI of the season but he showed he was ready to fight for his place after scoring for the Magpies in their 2-1 loss to Spurs.

“Not only did Joselu score with a tidy header – after a magnificent whipped cross from Matt Ritchie – but he also put himself about, caused Tottenham problems, and was a good link man,” Quinn said in the Chronicle Live.

However, the man who scored four goals on his debut for Newcastle, believes that Rondón is the better choice going forward.

“For me, Rondon is a stronger version of Joselu; he holds up play better, ruffles opposition defenders, and is more of a goal threat.

“Against Cardiff, it is essential Newcastle match their physicality. Neil Warnock will have his side pumped up and ready to battle for everything, so the Magpies have to be equal to that.

“That’s why Rondon should start. He will not be fazed and he will battle with their centre-backs to try and give United a platform in the game.”

Rondón scored seven times in the league for West Brom last season but the striker offers more than just goals, he is a physical presence up front, standing at 6ft 1in, and can put pressure on defenders with the strength he possesses.

Joselu only managed four league goals last season in a disappointing campaign for the Spaniard.

OPINION
Joselu would be disappointed not to keep his place after last week’s performance against a strong Tottenham side but Rondón’s quality may be what wins the Venezuelan a starting spot. As Mick Quinn pointed out, Cardiff will be a very physical side and Newcastle will have to match that if they are to leave with all three points. Rondón will offer a much better physical presence than his fellow striker and will be able to hold the ball up which will help bring Newcastle forward. Joselu may have looked good against Spurs but his form last season was just not good enough, with four goals from 30 games. We agree with Quinn – now that Rondón has arrived at St James’ Park he should be the main striker going forward as he will provide a much greater goal threat than the Spaniard. For Newcastle’s sake it’s important that he gets off to a fast start at his new club. A goal against Cardiff could make all the difference.
