Broadcaster Richard Keys has mocked Liverpool’s title chances on Twitter after Jurgen Klopp claimed he wants to beat the best rather than be the best.

As quoted by the Mirror, Klopp claims his goal is to beat favourites Manchester City as “often as possible” rather than managing the division’s outstanding team.

“If a team is better than yours, then you have to work out how to be at their level and how to beat them,” said the Liverpool boss. “I have never wanted to have the best team. I have never wanted to be the best player or the best manager.

“What interests me is to beat the best. The best team today in England is Manchester City. That means that the other teams are not the best. The goal then is to beat City as often as possible.”

BeIN Sports anchor Keys, formerly of Sky Sports and talkSPORT, responded “no” to Klopp’s stance aand even claimed it marks the end of Liverpool’s title chances.

OPINION:

Keys is viewed by many Liverpool fans as a wind-up merchant, whose mocking posts on social media and blogs are seen as attention-grabbing rather than worthy of real debate. But, does the former Sky man, who has broadcast on Premier League football ever since it began in 1992, have a point? Does Klopp have his priorities a little skewed? Should he not be aiming for Liverpool to be the best team and for him to be the outstanding manager around, and for everything else to then fall into place? Certainly he should. The limit of Klopp’s ambitions should not be just to overcome Man City. Liverpool did that in the Champions League and Premier League last season, which was a huge achievement but did not bring trophies in what was a thrilling near-but-not-quite campaign. While Pep Guardiola’s side have set the bar astonishingly high, they are beatable, but Liverpool must also overcome other opponents, including Manchester United and Tottenham, to secure their title holy grail.
