Liverpool are in hot pursuit of Barnet goalkeeping giant Kai McKenznie-Lyle after permission was granted for him to play for them, according to the Mirror.

The newspaper claim the 20-year-old, who stands at 6ft 7in, featured in a pre-season friendly for the club’s Under-23s side last week as he undergoes a trial ahead of a potential transfer.

The Mirror report that Liverpool are keen on giving a chance to McKenzie-Lyle as they continue the overhaul of their keeping roster following the landmark signing of Alisson for £67million.

Good move for Liverpool?

Much depends on how McKenzie-Lyle is viewed by the Liverpool coaches, who have run the rule over him during a trial over the last week. Is he a goalkeeper with the capacity to eventually challenge for a first-team spot? He is certainly a towering figure, standing head and shoulders above teammates in the match against Hungarian outfit ETO Gyor last Sunday. Encouragingly, McKenzie-Lyle is on the verge of becoming the number one at non-league outfit Barnet, which suggests his precocity matches his presence. Moreover, there could soon be vacancies in the keeping spots at Anfield, as senior duo Simon Mignolet and Loris Karius might both depart over the next eights days following the stunning capture of Alisson. With former number three Danny Ward also gone, following his £12million move to Leicester City, much is changing at Liverpool in the key position.

Likely to happen?

There is certainly an excellent chance. As reported by the Mirror, McKenzie-Lyle has already represented Liverpool in an Under-23s match, which is a sure sign the club are on the verge of a deal. London outfit Barnet have already granted permission for the rising star to head to Anfield for the trial, which suggests they are not looking to block the transfer and will allow him to move.
