Daniel Levy has made the “shock request” of demanding Real Madrid pay a staggering £178million if they want to sign Christian Eriksen this summer, according to Gianluca Di Marzio.

The Sky Sports Italy journalist reported on his personal website last night (Tuesday) that Real have turned their attention to Eriksen amid doubt over the future of Luka Modric.

Di Marzio explained that chairman Levy wants the second highest transfer fee in history – after the world-record £198million Neymar move to Paris Saint-Germain – if he is to green light Eriksen’s exit.

Good move for Tottenham?

One thing is for sure: there would be a mutiny from Tottenham fans if Levy was to offload Eriksen, even for £178million. The great Dane is regarded by many as the second most important player at the club, behind only goal king Harry Kane. Certainly, Eriksen is irreplaceable. Spurs have no other player who can match his creativity and technical quality. Replacing him in the transfer market would cost £50million-plus, and that would be for a player who they would hope could eventually reach Eriksen’s level, rather than already be there. Sure, £178million sounds ridiculous, and that’s probably why Levy said it, but selling your best players is footballing suicide.

Likely to happen?

It should worry Spurs supporters that long-standing chairman has even slapped an asking price on Eriksen. It is a different stance to saying Tottenham are unwilling to sell at any price. That said, the big money these days is in the Premier League and Paris rather than La Liga, and there is surely little chance of Real spending much beyond £100million for the Denmark international.
