Ragnar Klavan will arrive at Italian club Cagliari at lunchtime today (Friday) to finalise the terms of a permanent transfer from Liverpool, according to Gianluca Di Marzio.

The Sky Sports Italy journalist reported on his personal website this morning that the defender, 32, is to jet in and finalise the “last details” of a move costing £1.8million.

Di Marzio explained that Liverpool have given the go-ahead for Klavan to leave for the Serie A club after two years at Anfield.

Good move for Liverpool?

Jurgen Klopp’s side are only one match into the new season, but the signs are that the squad is well stocked for centre-back options. There was a mini-crisis going into the 4-0 hammering of West Ham over the identity of Virgil van Dijk’s partner due to injuries to Dejan Lovren and Joel Matip, and doubts over the fitness of Joe Gomez. But Gomez pulled through and delivered a classy display alongside defensive leader Van Dijk. Klopp has clearly decided that the 21-year-old, who spent last season rotating at right-back with brilliant teenager Trent Alexander-Arnold, is now ready to challenge for a regular centre-back role. This means Klavan is surplus to requirements. The 6ft 2in centre-back (source: Transfermarkt) has had some solid games in the last two years, but he is no longer needed.

Likely to happen

Yes, definitely. There is no better source of transfer news than the immaculate Di Marzio, son of a former Italian coach. Barring a late medical hiccup, expect an announcement in the next 24 hours that Klavan has put pen to paper on a Cagliari deal.
