Tottenham striker Vincent Janssen will imminently quit the club after being stripped of the number nine shirt, according to a club insider.

The Lilywhite Rose Twitter account, which is a reliable source of Spurs news, reported early on Tuesday afternoon that the Holland international is heading out of the exit door.

It is explained that Tottenham have failed to allocate an alternative first team squad number to Janssen as a move for him is now “imminent”.

Good move for Tottenham?

Yes, as Janssen did not make the matchday squad for last Saturday’s 2-1 win at Newcastle United after failing to convince Mauricio Pochettino that he should be welcomed back into the fold. The centre-forward was hailed as a marquee signing when he was prised from AZ Alkmaar in the summer of 2016 following a goal-drenched campaign in the Dutch Eredivisie. But it soon became clear that Janssen was not fit to lace the boots of the likes of Robin van Persie and Ruud van Nistelrooy, with his lack of mobility and movement a chronic flaw for a striker looking to thrive in the Premier League. The hope among Spurs fans is that the money from his sale will be ploughed into a replacement in January. They probably shouldn’t hold their breath on that one.

Likely to happen?

Yes. It has been mooted all summer that Janssen could quit after he spent last season on loan at Fenerbahce following a miserable first season at the club in 2016-17. Finding a buyer for the Dutchman is likely to have been problematic given his Spurs wages and chairman Daniel Levy’s expected willingness to recoup the £18million fee shelled out two years ago. That problem is likely to have been solved and expect an announcement imminently.
