After failing to sign any new players during the summer transfer window the return of injured star Erik Lamela could be just as good as a new recruit.

Lamela has only made 13 starts for Tottenham in the Premier League over the past two seasons, but he could be close to a first-team return.

Lamela provided an update to Tottenham fans on his latest injury via a post on Instagram, in which he shows that he is now back in training following a short-term muscle injury picked up just before the start of the season.

With the 5ft 11in attacking midfielder expected to be ready for action again soon, according to the Spurs Twitter account, this could be the boost Mauricio Pochettino’s side needs after a quiet summer.

When Lamela is fit and on form he is almost unstoppable.

The 26-year-old can take on players with his close control and quick bursts of speed making it so difficult for defenders to take the ball off of him.

On top of this he has the flair to perform skills and tricks at any given moment, often resorting to his favoured rabona kick.

Who can forget his unbelievable goal from the 2014 in a Europa League tie with Asteras when the playmaker confidently scored from outside the box with a rabona shot?

This is the Erick Lamela Spurs fans want to see, not the injury riddled, ineffective, winger that has been in North London the past few years, managing only five league assists in the last two seasons.

If the Argentinean has put his injury troubles behind him now and can now stay fit, the reported £70,000 a week man will be able show off the ability and talent he has.

This could be the perfect time for Lamela’s return after Spurs became the first Premier League team not to sign a single player in the summer transfer window, in addition to the recent departure of fellow attacker Son Heung-min to the Asia Games.

Lamela would be able to slot into Son’s starting XI position, while the 6ft South Korean is away, and feel like a new signing, knowing this is his chance to cement a spot in the first team by showing the Spurs faithful and manager Mauricio Pochettino just what he is capable of.
