Southampton midfielder Harrison Reed is close to moving to Blackburn Rovers on loan, according to HITC.

The football site reports that the Championship side are close to the signing of the 5’9″ [Transfermarkt] central enforcer, with boss Tony Mowbray wanting to bolster his midfield options before the transfer window closes next week.

The 23-year-old has fallen down the pecking order at St Mary’s, and did not feature in either match day squad for the Saints’ opening two games of the season.

He spent the 2017/2018 campaign on loan at second tier side Norwich City, making 43 appearances.

Good move for Southampton?

Yes, it is a good move. Reed has clearly fallen out of favour with Saints’ boss Mark Hughes after being farmed out on loan last season, and the same is set to happen this season as well.

The fact that he did not even make the match day squads for either match indicates that his game time is limited on the South Coast, so they are much better off removing him from the books this season.

Likely to happen?

Yes, it looks very likely to happen. Blackburn are on the verge of signing the young midfielder, and they look set to complete the deal before the deadline next week.

The move is likely to benefit both parties – Blackburn want to enhance their midfield, and Reed is undoubtedly looking for more regular game time.

Hopefully they can wrap up the deal soon, and Reed can get out on the pitch once again.
