Tottenham fans have taken to Twitter to deliver mixed verdicts to a club insider claim that striker Vincent Janssen is set for an immediate transfer after being stripped of his number nine shirt and not allocated a new number.

The Lilywhite Rose Twitter account, which has emerged as a reliable source of Spurs news, reported today (Tuesday) that the Dutch 23-year-old’s exit is “imminent” two years after his £18million arrival.

COMMENTARY:

Janssen might have been on the fringes at Tottenham for the best part of a year after spending last season out on loan at Fenerbahce. But out of sight has not been out of mind for the Spurs faithful, if the responses on social media to his reported humiliation from the club are anything to go by. There is a considerable degree of sympathy for the big striker from supporters. While some are claiming “good riddance” to his seemingly imminent exit, many believe he has been “harshly” treated and are convinced that it is a “shame” he will leave with a bitter taste in his mouth. Naturally, there are two sides to this story, and Mauricio Pochettino and his coaching staff might claim that Janssen is proving a whole heap of bother behind the scenes. But it is rare for a club to remove a shirt number from a player while he is still on the books, even one who is heading for a transfer. They usually wait until the deal is done and an announcement made. This appears a deliberate attempt by Spurs’ top brass to humiliate Janssen.
