With reports linking Burnley with Middlesbrough defender Ben Gibson, Everton’s season may hinge on them ambushing their Premier League rivals to secure his signature.

As reported by Sky Sports, Sean Dyche’s side have made a £12million bid for Gibson as they look to increase their defensive options.

However, as reported by Liverpool Echo, Everton have included the Middlesbrough central defender on their list of alternatives despite Burnley’s bid being accepted should they walk away from a deal to sign £30million-rated Yerry Mina from Barcelona.

It is crucial that the Toffees beat Burnley to the signing of 6ft Gibson as it could make or break their season (TransferMarkt).

In the last few friendly matches, Marco Silva’s side have looked an exciting prospect. They’ve looked quicker, sharper and play more attacking football than they have done in a long time, with fast attacking players constantly on the front foot and trying to take apart the opposition.

That’s all well and good, but in defence, they look the opposite of exciting. The defenders look nervous, slow and are making simple mistakes which are allowing opposition attackers in too easily. They need to bring in a defender who will lead the whole defensive unit, someone experienced who can guide the younger players and demand more from everyone.

That’s Ben Gibson in a nutshell. The defensive leader has made 185 appearances for Boro since his debut but has also been on loan at lower league clubs like Plymouth Argyle, York City and Tranmere Rovers, which developed his game and he’s become a more well-rounded defender over the last few years.

He shouts, barks and leads his team, constantly demanding more from everyone who doesn’t live up to the standard of his own performances. He can be no frills at times, which is not a bad thing, as he will put his body on the line if it means a goal is prevented.

Everton season could hinge on his arrival, they need to act quickly in the final few days to make sure he comes in, as he could solve their defensive issues.
