Simon Mignolet could be on the brink of leaving Liverpool, as Napoli race to beat their transfer deadline with a deal for the 30-year-old stopper, according to the Sun.

The report claims the Italian side are in talks with Liverpool and want a deal done by Friday, the Italian transfer deadline.

Mignolet’s agent Nico Vaesen is desperate for the deal to be done, saying: “We are in discussions with Napoli, but there is no agreement yet.

“In the end it is in their interest to find a solution.

“Simon is the best option for Napoli in terms of quality, even though there is a financial aspect to it.”

Good move for Liverpool?

When Jurgen Klopp paid £67million for Brazilian goalkeeper Alisson, the writing was on the wall for Simon Mignolet. He now seems to be third-choice keeper at Anfield, and after being the first-choice not long ago, that’s a situation he won’t be happy with. At 30 he needs to be playing regularly and Liverpool can do without him. They’ve got Loris Karius as stand-in for Alisson and they’ve already made it clear they don’t think Mignolet is good enough for them. If a deal can be struck, they should let him move to Napoli and try to resurrect his career. Whatever the thoughts about his quality, he’s been a loyal servant to Liverpool since he joined from Sunderland five years ago.

Likely to happen?

The report claims Napoli are closing in on a deal but it will all come down to the financials. Mignolet’s agent is clearly keen for the deal to be done and Mignolet himself will want to play first-team football. It’s now a race against time to see if a deal can be struck before the Italian window closes on Friday. We think there’s a decent chance it happens.
