Celtic are edging closer to signing free agent Youssouf Mulumbu with him undergoing a medical with the Glasgow giants, according to Sky Sports Scotland.

The broadcaster claimed on their official Twitter account on Thursday that Mulumbu, 31, is closing in on a return to Scottish football after leaving Kilmarnock at the end of last season when his contract expired.

The former West Brom and Norwich midfielder has been searching for a new club throughout the summer transfer window, and it appears as though Brendan Rodgers will be the manager to scoop him up.

Good move for Celtic?

Without doubt.

Mulumbu was one of the best midfielders in the Scottish Premiership last season and was a real driving force behind Kilmarnock’s rise up the table under the charge of Steve Clarke.

It was a real coup for Killie to sign the ex-West Brom star, who for years had dazzled the crowd at The Hawthorns with his energetic box-to-box displays, as well as his ability to step it up in big games.

Celtic are getting themselves a really good signing here and the fact that it is a free transfer makes it even better.

One worry about the 31-year-old is his injury record and lack of fitness, so it could be several weeks before he is up to speed to play for the first team.

Likely to happen?

Celtic look as though they are leaving it quite late, but it still seems as though they will get this deal in time for the transfer deadline.

Mulumbu has had injury problems but should pass his medical with ease as he will surely have been keeping himself over the summer in a bid to impress a new club.
