Lee Hendrie has urged Aston Villa to go out and re-sign Chelsea defender Gary Cahill before the loan window slams shut on Friday.

Cahill, 32, has failed to make any of Maurizio Sarri’s first three Premier League squads, however according to the Telegraph, the England international is set to stay and fight for his place at Stamford Bridge.

That has not stopped ex-Villa star Hendrie from drooling over the prospect of potentially signing the £100,000-a-week (Spotrac) defender though, as he believes Steve Bruce’s defence is not up the scratch.

“If Gary Cahill is available, what a great signing that would be. My big issue at the moment is defensively,” said Hendrie on his personal Twitter account on Monday.

OPINION

It seems as though Hendrie’s hopes have already burst into flames if the report from the Telegraph is true. Cahill is way too good for the Championship even though he is well out of the picture at Stamford Bridge and he would surely only consider leaving the London club if he was to be playing in a top-flight or earning a pay-rise. It’s not likely that Villa could even match the centre-back’s current wages if they were to sign him on loan, unless Chelsea were willing to let the West Midlands club play just a fraction of them, and with transfer windows still open around the world, it’s more likely he would go abroad than drop down to the second-tier than return to Villa Park. Bruce does need to add to his defence before the loan window closes on Friday, however he needs to look at more realistic targets that Cahill. Villa fans, like Hendrie, can always dream though.
