A number of Everton fans have turned to Twitter to voice their delight at the performance of homegrown defender Jonjoe Kenny in the League Cup win over Rotherham.
The Toffees triumphed 3-1 on Wednesday night courtesy of a double from Dominic Calvert-Lewin and another from Gylfi Sigurdsson, in what was a much changed starting XI from manager Marco Silva.
It included a number of young talents who have made their way through the youth system at Goodison Park, with the likes of Tom Davies, Mason Holgate and Kieran Dowell all starting, but it was the performance of born and bred Toffee Kenny which had many of the supporters drooling on social media.
This is Futbol has rounded up a selection of the supporters’ tweets:
HT #EFC 1-0 #RUFC: Nervy start for the Blues but improved as the game progressed. Sandro looked lively while Kenny the stand-out. Sigurdsson, Zouma & Digne have also shone

HT EFC 1-0 RUFC.
Jonjoe Kenny and Lucas Digne standouts.
Very impressive down both flanks.— Tony Scott (@Tony_Scott11) August 29, 2018
Well done Everton, DCL was classy, Digne & Kenny we’re great. Zonal marking still triggers me but can’t complain w/ 3-1. #EFC

Really happy with that tonight. It was a weird side but they got it done after a slow start. Digne and Kenny looked excellent, Zouma and Holgate fine (apart from that goal), DCL huffed and puffed and got his rewards. Onto the next round, let's win this bloody cup for once. #EFC

Digne great tonight, thought Kenny was decent as well. Conceding off corners for 3 games running is worrying, zonal marking doesn’t work #Everton

Opinion
There are few things better than seeing a player who has not only been brought through the youth system but was born and raised in and around the club break into the first team, and that is exactly the case with Kenny at Everton. The 21-year-old is one of a few young talents all of the same generation who are breaking into the Toffees’ first team and many were on display on Wednesday night. It bodes really well for the future that these homegrown starlets are waiting in the wing for their chance in the senior side, and judging by the Everton fans’ reaction, they certainly think Kenny and his team mates are ready for more action. He was really impressive against Rotherham and while the level of competition is significantly higher in the Premier League, the supporters are right to be excited about what he can bring to the side when he is either starting or supporting as a substitute.
