Everton defender Ashley Williams is being lined up for a loan switch to Stoke within the next 48 hours, according to Telegraph reporter John Percy.

The reliable journalist has claimed on his personal Twitter account that the Potters are hopeful of signing Williams, 33, on a temporary basis by the end of Friday.

The Daily Mail has recently reported Stoke’s interest in the senior centre-back and said that Everton could end up paying a percentage of his £65,000-a-week wages for him to head to the Staffordshire club.

Good move for Everton?

Everton’s defence was shockingly bad last season, even under Sam Allardyce’s leadership, and Williams’ form was at the heart of many poor rearguard performances.

For someone of his experience and professionalism, the Wales international was a major letdown with his constant lack of discipline and general feel that he did not care whether or not the Toffees won or lost.

Even though it seems like some of his wages will still be covered by the Blues, getting him out of the club is certainly a good idea as it will wind down the rest of his contract and should never see him play for the Merseysiders again.

Likely to happen?

Williams was bound to be shown the exit door this summer after an embarrassing campaign with Everton, and it is no surprise that he will be heading down to the Championship.

Stoke have done some big deals already and are favourites to earn promotion, so it is very much likely that he will be open to a move to the Potteries.
