Injury and rehab specialist Dan Birdsall has left Leeds United as part of an overhaul of their medical team after the arrival of Marcelo Bielsa.

The news was reported on the Training Ground Guru Twitter site, a solid source of backroom info, on Monday afternoon.

Head physio Steve Megson has also gone, with Henry McStay promoted to take his place.

Birdsall arrived at Leeds from Blackpool last July.

OPINION

Most fans don’t think much about the backroom staff but they could play a hugely important part in this season for Leeds. Much has been written about the Bielsa way of playing football and the good side of this has been highlighted across two fantastic wins for Leeds, against Stoke and Derby – two of the tougher games Leeds will play all season. The Leeds players look completely different to last season and fans are delighted. The summer’s big-money signing Patrick Bamford hasn’t even had a start yet. But it’s early days and if Leeds are going to keep their momentum going at the top of the table, they need to stay fit and avoid injury. The medical team is going to have their work cut out and Bielsa will want to be surrounded by people he trusts. Injury prevention and rehab could well become one of the bigger stories of the season as we head into winter and beyond.
