Leeds United midfielder Jamie Shackleton has signed a new long-term contract with the club, which will keep him at Elland Road until 2021.

Leeds United announced the news on its official Twitter page on Monday morning.

This comes after the 18-year-old made his senior debut for Leeds on Saturday, coming on for 17 minutes in the 4-1 demolition job on Derby County.

This is well deserved. Shackleton impressed in pre-season, playing three times for Leeds before coming on to make his senior debut for Marcelo Bielsa. The new Leeds manager has already said that age is no barrier to playing for his side, and Shackleton didn’t look out of place when he came on. Saying that, it’s always easier to come on when your side has already secured the points, and at 4-1 the damage had already been done to Frank Lampard’s side. It’s also true that Leeds are probably going to need a squad that’s got depth with the way that Bielsa plays his football. It’s fast-paced and frantic and the more players he has at his disposal, the better. It’s been a fantastic start to the season for Leeds though, who have been installed as the new favourites to win the Championship. They need to keep the momentum going and although they’ll probably field a weakened side against Bolton the first round of the Carabao Cup tomorrow night, they’ll still want to win. Shackleton should get his first senior start in a week that just keeps getting better for him.
