Swansea City striker Oli McBurnie has admitted it was nice to score against Leeds after they released him as a 15-year-old for not being tall enough.

The 6ft 3in striker said he would never hold a grudge as the move made him mentally tougher and got him to where he is now.

But, after watching Leeds with his friends as a kid, he admitted that it was good to score a couple of goals.

And he also revealed that his Leeds mates were in the crowd and wanted him to score, but Leeds to win.

“I guess everyone expected us to get pumped after the weekend and we’ve shut a lot of people up with that performance.

“Everyone thought Leeds were massive favourites going into the game, but they weren’t favourites in our dressing room,” McBurnie said to the BBC.

He went on to talk about his old Leeds friends being in the crowd at the Liberty Stadium, saying, “They were all in the crowd. They all said they wanted me to score but Leeds to win.

“I got released for not being tall enough, believe it or not. I was quite small when I was 15.

“I could never hold a grudge against them for that. I wouldn’t be where I was today if that hadn’t happened to me.

“It’s made me a lot mentally stronger and stuff like that, so it’s nice to score a couple against them.”

OPINION

Swansea looked like a really good side last night and for large portions of the game, they looked the better side. However, McBurnie also said that Swansea “shut a lot of people up” after the draw, but we’d say the actual result reflects better on Leeds. They lost a centre-back in the warm-up and played with a makeshift defence with Pontus Jansson also out injured. They had to come from behind twice but they showed real character to do it and could have snatched all three points at the end if Jack Harrison had remembered how to shoot. Leeds are top of the table and still undefeated, and getting past the adversity last night will give them another boost. McBurnie was a constant thorn in their side though, and plenty of Leeds fans must have thinking of what might have been after the childhood Leeds fan scored a brace and then opened up on being rejected as a kid. Maybe he’ll return to Elland Road one day.
