Leeds United will not be signing Everton’s Mo Besic on deadline day, according to a reliable journalist.

Leeds had been linked with a deadline-day busting £4.5million deal for Besic in the Daily Mirror (live transfer blog, 7.12am).

They claimed he was manager Marcelo Bielsa’s top target and that Leeds would try and land him before the 5pm cut-off.

However, Phil Hay, from the Yorkshire Evening Post, has scotched this report.

When asked by a Leeds fan if a £4.5million deal was likely he replied simply: “non-runner”.

OPINION

Phil Hay has very close links to Leeds and if anyone knows the ins and outs today it will be him. He went on to say that he expects it to be a quiet day today both in terms of signings and exits, which would marry up with what MD Angus Kinnear said earlier this week. Kinnear said Leeds would utilise the extended loan period to strengthen the squad now, seemingly ruling out any more permanent deals. However, the Mirror report did say that Bielsa would try and land Besic on loan if he couldn’t sign him before the end of the permanent transfer window later today. That could mean that Leeds could still get him before August 31 on a temporary basis. They’re also after Everton defender Matthew Pennington on loan, with the Premier League side expected to send him out for the season. Pennington has already had one loan spell at Elland Road but he’s unlikely to be first choice and that could mean Everton choose to place him elsewhere.
