Celtic are on the verge of signing former West Brom and Kilmarnock midfielder Youssouf Mulumbu after winning the race for his signature, according to the Daily Record.

The newspaper claims on their website that the 31-year-old free agent is set to sign a two-year deal with the Hoops after spending the whole summer searching for a new club since leaving Rugby Park at the end of last season.

Mulumbu is set to be Brendan Rodgers’ fifth signing of the summer after Scott Bain, Odsonne Edouard, Daniel Arzani and Emilio Izaguirre.

It is understood that Celtic saw off Swansea and Bordeaux in the hunt for the midfielder’s signature.

Good move for Celtic?

Mulumbu proved in his short spell at Kilmarnock last season that he can be a force to be reckoned with in the Scottish Premiership.

He was Killie’s man of the match as he scored in the 1-0 win against Celtic last term and also pulled the strings in wins against Rangers.

The former DR Congo international has had issues with fitness and injuries in the last few years though, but if he can stay fit then he is bound to be a quality signing for the Bhoys and should add some much needed strength in depth to Rodgers’ midfield.

Likely to happen?

Celtic really need to add to their midfield before the transfer window slams shut on Friday and Mulumbu, given his availability, should be snapped in time.

He may not be expected to play against Rangers on Sunday as he will surely be short of match fitness, but his name should be on the back of the programme for that game bar any late hitches.
