Suggesting that Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers should sell a World Cup semi-finalist before the end of summer might seem a step backwards for a club looking to improve their performances in Europe, but that is exactly what needs to happen with Dedryck Boyata.

Helping Belgium to finish third place in Russia this summer, the Hoops powerhouse has been one of the first names on the team sheet over the past couple of seasons at Celtic Park, offering strength and power in the heart of the defence.

A solid if inconsistent performer, his displays for his country should see his value rise, but with a year left on his contract in Glasgow, it is a difficult situation for Rodgers to manage – does he sell up or keep him on?

Well, that decision should be simple if reports are to be believed.

Spanish publication AS claim on their website that Sevilla are plotting a raid for the Belgian centre back with a valuation of £10million slapped on his head – a fair price for someone who has impressed for club and country – and the report states that Boyata has told the Hoops of his desperation to leave.

A player who does not want to stay, a contract which ends in less than a year and a potential eight-figure fee coming their way – the Hoops should be taking that money and running all the way to the bank.

Celtic might have a reputation as a selling club and offloading Boyata might not help their cause, but considering the bargains which can be found – fierce rivals Rangers are proving that – that £10million could go a long way to helping the Hoops’ cause.
