Blackburn are “trying to do a deal” for Southampton midfielder Harrison Reed, according to Sun reporter Alan Nixon.

The reliable journalist claimed on his personal Twitter account on Wednesday night that Reed, 23, may not be the only player snapped up by the North West club before the end of the month as Tony Mowbray eyes more additions to his side.

Blackburn are only able to sign players on loan at the moment, and it appears as though they have set their sights on the £12,000-a-week (Spotrac) Saints midfielder, who spent last season on loan at Norwich.

Good move for Southampton?

Reed is 23 years old but does not look as though he is in Mark Hughes’ first team plans at the moment, without so much of an appearance on the bench in the opening two Premier League fixtures.

Last season, the former England Under-20 international did well while on loan at Norwich and it is probably fair to say that he is definitely good enough for the Championship, but not at the level required to play in the Premier League yet.

One more year out on loan could do the world of good for Reed and with an attack-minded manager like Blackburn boss Mowbray, he could flourish and return to St Mary’s next year much more ready for Premier League football.

Reed has just under three years left on his contract so it is important that he is still playing regular football.

Likely to happen?

It would be quite a logical move on behalf of everyone, so there is a good chance of this happening.

Reed would surely be happy to have first team football, Blackburn would be happy to get a decent central midfielder and Southampton should be happy to potentially save some money on his wages and see that he continues to develop.
