Newcastle have agreed a £6million fee with Swansea for Federico Fernandez and he is on his way to St James’ Park for a medical, according to the Sun.

Benitez will hook up with the Argentinian enforcer again after he managed him at Napoli.

The report claims that Fernandez had been in Benitez’s sights for week but it’s taken this long to sort the fee out.

He has now headed for a medical with personal terms said not to be an issue.

OPINION

A previous report had said that Swansea were holding out for £10million and we wished them good luck getting that from Newcastle. It now seems a compromise has been reached with £6million seeming like more than a fair fee for the defender. He is now on his way for a medical and barring any problems with that, it looks like Benitez and the Newcastle fans will have something to celebrate on deadline day. It might not be a marquee signing but Fernandez will strengthen the squad and he’s a player that Benitez knows very well from their previous stint working together. One in the bag then, almost, but will there be any more incomings for Newcastle? They’re still being linked with a lot of players and there’s still time for deals to get over the line. After 5pm it will just be loan deals for Newcastle, although not domestic ones, and there are still plenty of areas of the team that need attention.
