Rangers-mad midfielder James Morrison is available for a free transfer at the moment after his contract at West Brom expired – and he would be the perfect signing for Steven Gerrard if he was able to pry him away from The Hawthorns.

The Express and Star has claimed that Morrison, 31, is continuing to train with the Baggies after his deal expired at the end of June in a bid to prove his fitness to manager Darren Moore and earn himself a new contract.

However in 2011, an interview that was quoted by the Express revealed that Morrison has been dreaming of playing for Rangers for a long time and that he would like to one day seal a switch to Ibrox to play for his boyhood club.

That was seven years ago, and there is no time like the present for the Scotland international to realise his dream and for Gerrard to snap up a top quality playmaker who is bound to take the Scottish Premiership by storm next season.

Morrison has a great ability on the ball, an abundance of Premier League and international experience and when used in his best position behind a forward, he can create a plethora of chances to score.

The Express has recently reported that Cardiff are lining up a £3million swoop for Josh Windass, so Gerrard will be in need of an attacking midfielder to fill his role and Morrison is an ideal replacement that will cost nothing at all.

He is also a massive upgrade on someone like his former West Brom team-mate Graham Dorrans, who has struggled to find a rhythm since moving to Ibrox due to his injury problems.

But once Morrison has shown that he can stay fit, Gerrard should definitely make an approach to sign him because judging by his comments in 2011, he would be all for a move to Rangers.
